Today we worked on the grammar bytes websites doing whatever exercises we wanted. James, Jaycee and I all worked on them competing for the best percentages. It made it more amusing to be competing. I did Exercise 1 on Commas. This one wasn't bad but it did help me with some trouble concepts that i did not understand until i saw them used and placed in the right word context. On the comma exercise I got 80% . I did not know at first that if you correct your answer after ,you still get some points. For the next exercise I did Pronoun Case Exercise 1. This one was not so easy but again seeing how they work and do not work in a sentence helped to clear up some troubles that I was having. It was the use of "me" that I had the most problems with. The sentences just sounded strange with the word "me" in them. In the end I scored a 75% on this exercise. The fact that the website gave you the answer afterwards help a lot because now some of those rules and concepts are placed in my brain. For my last exercise I did the Word choice Exercise 1 using their, there, they're. I scored 95% on this one. I found it very easy to do. Some had little tricks to them but this one was a piece of cake. This website was a fun and easy way to visually learn and see how certain words and the use of grammar must be applied for the sentence to be as complete as possible.

Horses of the Night
1) I believe that when it says that she put it away gently and ruthlessly that the gently is referring to the way in which she was actually putting it away and the ruthlessly is more about what the saddle stood for. She puts the saddle away almost like Chris's personality. He was gentle and ruthless.
2) Chris was a character that you got to know very well. He was determined, very strong willed and extremely optimistic. Chris had a unique ability to be able to take his mind out of a place that he did not want to be. He had a very vivid imagination and was extremely good with his hands. Chris was a very different kind of character, he did change in the story but only in age. From the beginning of the story to the end Chris is always the same. Always holding on and hoping that everything will get better.Chris is definatly someone to whom everyone can relate to and this makes it easy to sympithize for him. You will always have people in the world that dont think you are good enough. Everyone has some way to deal with people and their negative attitudes. Although in almost every case, just like chris, people often create places in their mind that they can go when things get to hard. In chris's case you can feel symathey for him because everyone has had hard times and bad times. Everyone at some point in their lives has felt like they could not do it but with chris he never stops trying. I think that is why it is easy to symathize for him because you can see all of his potential and yet it all goes to waste.
3)Vanessa was a dynamic character. Although it did not seem like she was changing you as the reader can see that she is becoming older and more understanding. She is finally becoming a women. Which is what she wanted all the way through the story. Also the way that she feels about Chris kind of changes throughout the story. She goes from a friendship or crush to possible being in love with him.
4)I believe that the saddle represents Chris's world that he lives in. The saddle is a symbol of the place that Chris goes to get away from the world. In the letter he sent back to Vanessa he says that he is not even in his body anymore and I believe that the saddle is that part of Chris the imagination, the whole other world that he goes to when times get to hard to handle.

The Shining Houses
1) Explain what type of narration is used in this story.
There are three types of narration in this story there is retrospective narration and present progressive narration.
2) How is "The Shining Houses" structured? Why do you suppose Munro structured the narrative this way?
The shinning houses is structured in a way that you can get a little bit of the back story before you get right into the story. The story is set up like this for a reason. The author wants the reader to get to know Mrs. Fullerton. Also the author has to have Mary get to know Mrs.Fullerton's back story. Without this aspect of the story the reader would have had a totally different out look when it came to Mrs.Fullerton, they would nothave been able to empathize with her. Also Mary probably would not have had a character change when it came down to getting ride of Mrs.Fullertons house. This was set up by the author one to make it a better story and two, to make it the story that she imagined.
3) Discuss irony in the story with respect to the title.
The shinning houses is ironic because the houses are not shinny and the people living in them are not good people they do not have shinny personalities.
4) What distinction does the story highlight in terms of the difference between legal and moral?
The story shows that there is a large different between legal and moral. There are many things that are legal but they are not the morality right thing to do. In the story the "new people" all want to get rid of Mrs. Fullerton's house and yes they are legally going about getting rid of the house the right way but they are over looking the morals behind making someone move out of a house that they love. They simply look over her feelings and only care about what is best for them.
5) Sketch Mary's character. (note: this doesn't mean draw her, rather it means to describe her in terms of the definition above)
Mary's is a mother, she is caring, and seems to be content in the beginning of the story. She has moral values and knows that you have to respect people and what they want. See knew that you should respect your elders. She had the motivation to do what was best for Mrs. Fullerton based on the story that was told to. Mary was smart and knew what kind of a person she wanted to be. She did not let her feelings go hidden. although in the end to save herself greif it seemed, she over looked her own feelings to simply keep the peace.

Miss Brill
1) Describe the narration used in "Miss Brill"
Miss Brill has alot of different narration going on in it. There is limited narration because the narator does not seem to know that miss Brill is mentally not well. There is also retrospective narration because it is written to take place in the past and also unreliable narration because the narrator never clearify's that Miss Brill is crazy which would have helped the reader understand the story.
2) How reliable is the narration in "Miss Brill"? What are some clues that the actual events in the story are somewhat different than the narrator's version?
I would not say the narration in miss brill is overly reliable due to the fact that a major component of the story was left out. (the fact that she was crazy)The actaull events are different in the story because you can tell that some stuff doesnt not actaully make sence and you can tell that these are different then they woudl be in real life.
